Mr. Super Deluxe

Mr. Super Deluxe himself… the man behind the band… is none other than… Wilton Elder. Wilton founded the group in Charleston in 2008 and currently oversees the group operation as Creative Director, Lead Singer, Saxophonist, DJ and Master of Ceremonies.

Wilton has worked as a teacher of many disciplines for over 25 years, having previously been on the faculty at Meeting Street Academy, Bishop England High School, and Trident Technical College, where he created curriculum and taught Music Appreciation (MUS105).

In addition to sharing his love of learning, Wilton has also worked at cutting-edge music and media corporations like Apple Inc. and ioWorldMedia, where he built (from scratch) and hosted his own 24-hr radio channel, radioioJAM.

As a major proponent of new music and founding member of the Rasa Saxophone Quartet, Elder both competed for and received the prestigious MTNA National Chamber Music Award (2003), and is featured on the recorded premiere of Allen Anderson’s An Opportunity for Mischief on Albany Records (Amazon, Apple, Spotify, YouTube).

Wilton has performed with a wide array of musicians, artists, and groups such as the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bio Ritmo, Derek Trucks Band, Soulive, Col. Bruce Hampton, Will Hoge, North Carolina Wind Orchestra, Rene Marie, Brian Jones, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and Grant Green Jr.

Elder’s principal teachers include Brian Doyle and Joe Lulloff, in addition to master classes with Frederick Fennell, Clifford Leaman, James Forger, and Jean-Marie Londeix.

He holds music performance degrees from both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.M.) and Michigan State University (M.M.),
